Navaratri Festival Series
Mumbadevi
This painting of Goddess Mumbadevi is created as part of the Navratri (Nine holy nights) festival series
According to a legend, Mumbadevi, an eight-armed Goddess, was sent by 'Lord Brahma' to vanquish an evil demon known as 'Mumbaraka', who terrorized the locals. After his defeat, Mumbaraka fell on his knees and begged the Goddess to take his name.
The temple for this goddess was built in 1675 near the main landing site of the former Bori Bunder creek in South Mumbai. The temple is considered the guardian deity of Mumbai, and the city's name Mumbai, is derived from this goddess.
The artist has captured the face of the idol in exquisite detail with vivid colors combined with imagination which brings the mythological tales of this goddess back to life.
Watercolor and gouache on cotton paper 12x12 in.
