Gawkee
This Bhutanese man was spotted outside a traditional dzong (fortress-monastery). Wearing a traditional Bhutanese outfit (called a gho), he reflects both the cultural pride and the religious values of Bhutan. While Bhutan is a famously happy nation (with its net worth measured as “Gross National Happiness” rather than a financial “Gross National Product” as in every other country), her subject on this occasion was in fact a little overwhelmed by the focus on the locals and their unique way of life. Since Bhutan has only recently opened up to international tourism in the last few decades, his pensive expression perhaps captures some reservation or curiosity about outsiders.
